I think one of the fallacies is to conflate not making mistakes with doing things automatically, and/or to conflate practicing doing things automatically with achieving automaticity.

It really is all so counterintuitive .... massed practice "feels" like automaticity, or like fluency
You're getting every answer right, over and over, which is what happens when you're fluent
Yet the next day or the next week, you find out you've forgotten
